Parts Work

Picture
Understanding the many parts of ourselves and creating space for healing.

Trauma can leave us feeling divided inside. One part of us may long for connection while another pulls away. One part may be confident and capable, while another carries fear, shame, anger, or self-doubt. At times, we may find ourselves reacting in ways that seem confusing or disconnected from who we believe we are.

Parts Work is an integrative way of understanding these different aspects of our inner world. Rather than viewing these experiences as something that is “wrong” with us, Parts Work invites curiosity about the different parts of ourselves, how they developed, what they may be protecting, and what they need.

Parts Work draws from a variety of therapeutic traditions, including depth psychology, Jungian psychology, ego-state approaches, attachment theory, trauma therapy, and Internal Family Systems (IFS). At Sol Therapy we do not rely on one particular model. Instead, we integrate elements from different parts-based approaches according to what feels most helpful and appropriate for each person.

Bringing Inner Parts to Life

One of the unique aspects of our approach is incorporating expressive and experiential therapies into Parts Work. Sometimes our inner parts are difficult to put into words. Creative approaches can give them another way to communicate.

Through Sandplay, Therapeutic Art, Play Therapy, SoulCollage®, and other expressive practices, we can give form and expression to parts of ourselves that may be hidden, young, protective, wounded, or longing to be heard.

A figure in a sandtray might represent a vulnerable part or a protective part. A SoulCollage® card might give an image and voice to an aspect of yourself you have struggled to understand. Play, art, or symbolic objects can help bring an internal experience into the room so that it can be seen, explored, and approached with compassion.

This process can create a bridge between the conscious and unconscious parts of our experience. Instead of simply talking about a part, you may begin to see it, feel it, interact with it, and develop a different relationship with it.

From Inner Conflict to Greater Wholeness

Parts Work is not about getting rid of the parts of ourselves we don't like. Even the parts that seem difficult, reactive, or self-sabotaging often developed for a reason. Many emerged as ways of coping with experiences that were overwhelming, painful, or unsafe. Trauma-informed Parts Work helps us approach these parts with curiosity rather than judgment. Over time, we can begin to understand their roles, recognize the burdens they may carry, and develop more choice in how we respond.

The goal is not to become someone different. It is to develop a deeper relationship with all of who you are, creating greater internal compassion, integration, and a sense of wholeness.

You are more than any one part of yourself. Parts Work offers a way to listen to the many voices within you while reconnecting with the deeper, more authentic self underneath.
