EMDR

EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapeutic approach designed to help process and heal distressing experiences, traumatic memories, negative beliefs, anxiety, and emotional patterns that may feel “stuck” in the nervous system. EMDR supports the brain’s natural ability to reprocess experiences so they can be integrated in a healthier and less emotionally overwhelming way.

At Sol Therapy, EMDR is approached thoughtfully, collaboratively, and at a pace that feels safe and supportive for each individual. Because EMDR can be an intense and deeply activating process, I believe the therapeutic relationship and a sense of emotional safety are essential foundations before beginning reprocessing work.

Rather than rushing into trauma processing, I take time to build a strong therapeutic relationship, understand your history, and help develop grounding, emotional regulation, and internal resources. Not every client is immediately ready for EMDR, and together we will assess whether it feels appropriate, supportive, and aligned with your needs and nervous system.

What Is EMDR Reprocessing?

During EMDR reprocessing, clients briefly focus on a distressing memory, emotion, sensation, or belief while engaging in bilateral stimulation—gentle back-and-forth stimulation that helps the brain process information differently. In my practice, I primarily use handheld tactile pulsers, often called tappers, which alternate soft vibrations from one hand to the other.

This rhythmic stimulation can help activate the brain’s natural healing processes, allowing memories and emotional experiences to become less overwhelming over time. Clients often notice shifts in emotions, body sensations, thoughts, or insights as the brain begins integrating experiences in a new way.

EMDR reprocessing is always guided carefully and collaboratively. You remain aware, grounded, and in control throughout the process, and we move at a pace that feels manageable and supportive.

A Relational and Integrative Approach

My approach to EMDR is relational, trauma-informed, and flexible. I follow the client’s lead and honor each person’s unique pace and readiness throughout the process. Sessions are never about “pushing through” difficult material, but about creating enough safety, support, and stability for healing to unfold gradually and sustainably.

Depending on the client and the work being explored, EMDR may also be integrated with expressive and creative modalities such as Sandplay Therapy, Therapeutic Art, journaling, mindfulness, or SoulCollage®. These approaches can help deepen insight, support emotional regulation, and provide additional ways to process experiences that may be difficult to express through words alone.

EMDR Can Help With:
  • Trauma and PTSD
  • Childhood wounds and attachment trauma
  • Anxiety and panic
  • Depression
  • Negative self-beliefs and shame
  • Grief and loss
  • Relationship patterns
  • Emotional overwhelm
  • Life transitions
  • Disturbing memories or experiences that continue to feel unresolved

Healing through EMDR is not about erasing the past, but about helping the nervous system process experiences in a way that allows for greater clarity, resilience, self-compassion, and emotional freedom in the present.
